Rimfire Tactical….what exactly is that supposed to mean?
Seriously, what’s tactical about a Rimfire rifle or handgun? Does the military or police use them? Yes, on occasion…but that’s not what we’re talking about here…
I started using this name when I started a Facebook group in 2015. I started this group as a place to talk about and share ideas, pics and stories, about the Rimfire rifles and handguns that we enjoy shooting…especially as Rimfire Trainers.
If you’re not familiar with the term Rimfire Trainers, this is using a Rimfire rifle or handgun to train and practice with. Why would you use a Rimfire to train or practice instead of just using a centerfire? Here are just a few reasons:
- To save money since .22LR is much cheaper to shoot than any centerfire rounds
- To make less noise… .22LR is much quieter than nearly all centerfire rounds
- To practice or train when you don’t have access to longer ranges
- To practice or train without fear of recoil
There are many other reasons, but these are the ones most often talked about. In the last several years, the use of Rimfire Trainers has continued to grow and has spawned not only a host of new rifles, handguns, optics and more…but entirely new shooting competitions.
Many shooters, myself included, have found using Rimfires for training to be quite helpful…and a lot of fun!
A lot of shooters have started to build or buy dedicated Rimfire rifles and handguns and are equipping them with optics that traditionally have been thought of as designed for centerfires.
This is where the Rimfire Tactical name comes in. Quite a few of us that enjoy these types of rifles and handguns, as well as the shooting comps they’re designed for and used in, would talk about them and share pics of them in various gun forums and Facebook groups. A lot of the members of the forums and groups weren’t very interested or didn’t really understand why anyone would want a Rimfire rifle that was built to resemble a centerfire. They also couldn’t understand why someone would put an expensive or tactical style rifle scope on a Rimfire…after all, it’s just a .22!
The Rimfire Tactical Group is a fantastic place and one I’m very proud of. So, if the Rimfire Tactical Group is so great, why RimfireTactical.com?
Great question! While the Rimfire Tactical Group has lots of growth and a ton of engagement…it’s still on Facebook and Facebook isn’t exactly “firearms friendly”. Facebook has a history of shutting down firearms groups without hesitation or notice.
So, here we are!
Now, with all that being said, what’s your idea of a tactical style Rimfire?
